WELCOME TO A.V.'S MARATHON GOLDEN IDOLS
The Marathon Golden Idols is an A.V. awards ceremony. We choose 5-6 movies from the same genre, director etc. to view and compare. The various category winners are awarded a Golden Idol statuette, officially called the Chachapoyan Fertility Idol, which has become desired by Adventurers worldwide.
All Marathons are hosted by Brad Hawkins, with current Marathon Men, Nathan Plantenga and Kyle Brown. Together we represent the A.V. community of cinephiles. This exercise has helped us understand filmmaking and changed the way we watch movies. We use the marathon to examine and discuss films we've needed to see or haven't seen in a while.

Anime Marathon
The live-action Ghost and the Shell opens on March 31, 2017 and has inspired a very colorful marathon. Animated films don't get talked about as much as you'd expect on Adventures in Videoland so we are changing that in 2017. We decided to marathon classics and critical works of art to get a real good feel for the genre. We watched Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited Away, Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll, Akira, and Ghost in the Shell. Let's talk about movies!
Side Note: We left off most of Hayao Miyazaki's films because we're doing a marathon in honor of the director on Labor Day.
Golden Idol Winner: Akira
Action Marathon
We celebrated the release of John Wick 2 by breaking out the big guns. We tried to choose a wide variety of films that contain all the expected things from a good action film- blood, guts, bullets spraying, and fun banter. Action movies are all over the map with different sub genres all nestled under the umbrella of Action. For our first marathon of 2017 The Marathon Men chose movies that are considered some of the best, if not THE best in their respective sub-category. What movies did we marathon? Representing the new millennium and considered the two best action movie of the 21st century we chose The Raid: Redemption and Mad Max: Fury Road. Representing the classics and considered two of the best action movies of all time we chose Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Die Hard. Representing John Woo, a legend of the action genre we chose his Hong Kong masterpiece Hardboiled. And representing all genres of action and considered a gateway for martial art movies we chose The Wachowski's The Matrix. Let's talk about movies.
Side Note: Hardboiled features 300+ kills!
