A.V. Pull List: Vampires attack the Vatican in Mark Millar’s newest horror comic
Mark Millar, the acclaimed writer behind Kick-Ass, Kingsman, and Wanted, has returned with a new horror comic that demands attention. Titled Vatican City, this limited series blends vampires with apocalyptic horror in a way only Millar can.
The premise is immediately gripping. A vampire apocalypse has decimated the world, and humanity is rapidly losing the war. These are not romanticized creatures of the night. They are brutal, fast, and relentless. The last bastion of human resistance is the fortified spiritual heart of the Catholic Church, Vatican City. Surrounded by high walls and protected by sacred rites, the Vatican stands as the final holdout against total extinction.
However, safety is far from guaranteed. Although the holy protections keep vampires at bay, the undead have found another way in. Human collaborators serve as agents, infiltrating the city and digging toward something ancient and powerful that lies buried beneath the Vatican. Whatever it is, the vampires want it badly.
Inside the walls, we follow a small group of survivors. Priests, nuns, and ordinary citizens have taken up arms and placed their faith in action. They are all that stands between humanity and complete annihilation. The atmosphere is thick with desperation and resolve. Picture the claustrophobic terror of 30 Days of Night combined with the siege-driven intensity of Assault on Precinct 13.
The second issue is out today, and it could not come soon enough. After such a strong start, I am genuinely curious to see if the story holds up. Will the momentum continue? Will the mystery deepen? If the second issue delivers, Vatican City may very well end up being one of the standout horror comics of the year.
If you are a fan of supernatural horror, post-apocalyptic survival, vampires that are actually terrifying, or religious horror, this is a title you should not miss. Ask your local comic shop about it or keep an eye out for the collected edition if you prefer to read it all at once.
This series already has me hooked, and I cannot wait to see where it goes next. Let me know what you think in the comments. Have you picked it up yet? Are you Team Vampire or Team Vatican?
